Who is Mac Cuu? The origin of Mac Cuu Death Anniversary

Kien Giang is a province in the southwest of the Mekong Delta, which is famous not only for Phu Quoc Island - the largest offshore island of Vietnam but also for the land of Mac Cuu - the first pioneer king of this area who finally joined his land to Vietnam.

Mac Cuu, also known as Mac Kinh Cuu, is from Cantonese, China. In the 1680s, uncompromising with the new Qing dynasty, he fled his country to present-day Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Realizing that the land of Ha Tien (Previously known as Phuong Thanh) was in a commercial location and charming style, he decided to stop there to establish a career and reclaim and open the land. After 1700, he became more attached to the Nguyen lord and eventually offered the land to him in 1724, adding the southernmost part to the modern map of Vietnam. Plus, it was he who named Phu Quoc the famous island and made it a part of Vietnam.
