The July full moon is an opportunity for people in the Cao - North - Lang region to recall the souls of the warriors of the insurgent army Nung Chi Cao - a Tay ethnic group hero who lived in the 11th century under the Ly Dynasty. Nung Tri Cao was the son of a local leader who had been educated by the Ly court, assigned the right to govern and protect the northern border of the country against the invasion of the Song Dynasty in the North.
On this day, the Tay people will set aside all other labor and focus solely on Tet preparations. The market is usually busier than usual on the day before Tet, with typical things such as green beans, cake leaves, forest bananas... and duck meat, which is an obligatory dish for the Tay people on the full moon day of July.
To honor ancestors, the Tay people of Bac Kan prepare meals such as fish cake with ginger leaves, "Peng Tai" cake, duck meat, fresh vermicelli... on the full moon day of July and make offerings to the spirits in order to wish all family members and clans health and peace.
The method for producing Peng Tai cake is identical to the method for making Kinh gai cake. The cake is made with the most aromatic glutinous rice flour, chopped wild banana or hemp leaves, and completely cooked. Heat fresh forest banana leaves until soft, then place two round cakes with a cup coiled into the same leaf. When the cake is finished, it will be offered to the ancestors, and the remainder will be hung on a pole to be consumed gradually. There is also banh chung (also known as Peng Ho) on the full moon of the seventh month of the Tay. Banh Chung of the Tay people is wrapped with wild dong leaves, filled with carp, and fresh ginger leaves. In addition to Peng Ho, Peng Tai, making vermicelli ..., the Full Moon Festival in July, Dong Bao Tay also eats duck meat. The most delicious and fattest ducks will be slaughtered to offer to their ancestors, and to the land... to pray for good luck and good things to come to the family.
