Information about Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the four most important festivals in Vietnam, held in mid-autumn on the full moon day (15th day) of the eighth lunar month, the fullest and brightest moon day of the year. The Mid-Autumn Festival evolved from a farming rite. Farmers used to gaze at the moon to predict the weather and crops: "If you want to eat rice in the 5th lunar month, look for the full moon in the 8th lunar month."

According to a spokesman of the Thang Long - Ha Noi Heritage Conservation Center, the Mid-Autumn event has been a national event since the Ly Dynasty, taking place concurrently in the royal court and among the people. According to the Sung Thien Dien Linh stele (in Long Doi Son Pagoda, Ha Nam Province) (1121), the Mid-Autumn Festival was held very gravely by the royal court during the reign of Emperor Ly Nhan Tong.

Ha Noi Mid-Autumn Festival will be organized in Thang Long Citadel

In addition to significant royal events, the emperor scheduled a three-day festival for the people to enjoy. Brocade and magnificent floral lights were used to embellish Thang Long citadel. The Mid-Autumn Festival remained an important festival for the royal family and the country throughout the following feudal regimes. Aside from traditional folk, families frequently make a feast to honor ancestors during the day and a feast to enjoy the moon at night.

By default, the Mid-Autumn Festival has become a children's festival. The children have been delighted since the first days of the eighth lunar month; their parents give them toys, and they have fun carrying lanterns, drumming, and lion-dancing through the streets and villages beneath the glorious fall moonlight. This is a cultural treasure with a thousands-year history that must be maintained and promoted.
